Mark your Calendar for December 14, 12:00 to 4:00 "Campfire Christmas Stories"
Combine toe tapping western music, a touch of time travel, 19th Century Christmas carols, crafts, a visit from a Frontier Santa, and what have you got? Glad you asked!! It's Frontier Christmas on Saturday, December 14, at the Fred Oldfield Western Heritage Center. (The Center is located just inside the Red Gate at the Puyallup Fairgrounds.)
The second in a series of free Community Events, Campfire Christmas includes a variety of entertainment and events.
A Main Attraction every hour on the hour - just plain fun the rest of the time!
 |
- "How The West Was Sung" starts the entertainment at 1:00 p.m. with a sneak preview, first time ever presentation of the new Spring Show from
the 42 voice Valley Chorale.
The forty-two voice group spends a year producing each annual show, so "How The West Was Sung" is a the first look at the show that will be presented in April at the Sumner Performing Arts Center. "How the West was Sung" includes a glimpse of the old west from saloon gals to wagon trains and, of course, cowboys singing old favorites around the campfire. Tickets will be available in January.
- Time travel commences at 2:00 with an appearance by the Captain of HMS Beaver, William Henry McNeil (portrayed by Ft. Nisqually Reenactor and radio personality Jerry V. Ramsey.) HMS Beaver was the first steamship on the Pacific in bringing goods to the Hudson Bay Company at Ft Nisqually, where Dupont is currently located. A display of pictures of the original HMS Beaver will be available as the result of an intermuseum loan from The Dupont Historical Museum. Captain McNeil appears at 2:00.
Also on the program at this hour are 19th century Christmas carols presented by Jerry Oldfield.
- At 3:00, the afternoon will close with carols and a sing along by the mixed choir from Sumner High School. The choir is directed by Mark Kloepper.

Doors are open from 12:00 to 4:00. Throughout the afternoon children can visit by the campfire with our frontier Santa, and Mrs. Claus, enjoy Christmas Crafts and meet Center patriarch Fred Oldfield. Note: We are asked how we can be sure our Frontier Santa is authentic. In actual fact, no one else seems ever to have seen a Frontier Santa, and we have. So we know our Santa is the genuine item. (Our Mr. & Mrs. Santa are portrayed by Myrna & Rich Sterbenz who met and fell in love in her classroom- that's a Christmas story.)
Meet and visit with our very special Frontier Santa and Mrs. Claus. Tell them your wishes and hear thier stories.
Hands on Christmas Crafts for the kids to take home.
Fred Oldfield will be selling his new collection of paintings and demos just in time for the Holidays.
Join your friends and come on down to the Heritage Center. Admission and parking are free. The Fred Oldfield Western Heritage Center is located just inside the Red Gate at the Puyallup Fairgrounds.
